Biotechnology Smallest LED illuminators for vitreoretinal surgery

In 2014 Akasaki, Amano and Nakamura received the Nobel Prize in Physics for the development of blue LEDs, which also enable the production of white LEDs. Seldom before a Nobel Prize-discovery has led so quickly to so many revolutionary developments. A further one could become the use of small LED Illuminators in retinal surgery, which are cheaper and safer for patients than the currently used endoilluminators powered by Xenon light sources.
