Electro optical hybrids for high reliability

Integrating electrical with optical functionality has been ongoing for decades. A mass-market calling for electro optical standard building blocks is still missing and a breakthrough for photonic circuits on larger scales is still due. In this article we demonstrate that, following the rules of economics and product reliability, promising applications do exist for which integrated electro optical systems are the way to go.
