Electromagnetic optical engineering – an introduction

The use of an electromagnetic field model in optical design does not indicate abandonment of the application of geometrical optics. Electromagnetic modelling in optics is in fact a generalisation of existing methods, and given present-day computing techniques makes increasingly more sense for practical applications. Analogue to the introduction of ray tracing herein lies the next major step for optic design.
