Communication networks have to be further evolved to cope with the continuously increasing data traffic. The most promising option is the scaling from the current 10 Gb/s Ethernet standard to 100 Gb/s. In addition to the optimum network architecture and the protocols for communication, optical and electrical components have to be extended beyond today’s technical limits. The challenge is the right mix of optical and electronic circuits to match high quality transmission at lowest overall cost.
