The pulsed fiber laser: evolution and application

Up until 10 years ago, pulsed fiber lasers’ performance peaked out in the mW or low Watt range. Such lasers were used primarily for communications technology. Hardly anyone imagined using such a laser to process materials until the first pulsed fiber laser was launched for the industrial marking of materials in 2000. In this article, fiber laser technology is explained and illustrated using marking intended to track & trace products, e.g. photovoltaic cells.
