Custom-designed lenses: how to reduce risk and improve results

It is crucial that all sides in a joint development and procurement program understand and document the scope of work, expectations and responsibilities of all parties. When lens development programs go awry, the results often include blown schedules, ill-defined nonrecurring engineering programs, overpriced prototypes, rework and worse. To avoid such problems, state-of-the-art optics design, manufacturing, and mounting processes are following a holistic approach. This article is intended to foster efficient and successful cooperation in optics development.
