While large scale integrated circuits have revolutionised the electronics industry, the optical components industry has been surprisingly slow to recognise the benefits that photonic integration can bring. The concept of photonic integration has been proposed for over 35 years [1-5], but commercial, large-scale photonic integrated circuits (LS-PICs) were not realized until 2004, with the introduction of 10-channel 100 Gb/s transmitters and receivers .
